Wind meets Gas 2025 – Securing Economy and Energy in the North Seas Region

On October 9–10, 2025, the historic Martinikerk in Groningen once again hosted the Wind meets Gas symposium, now in its 9th edition. Organized by the New Energy Coalition, this year’s event brought together over 550 participants from 30+ countries to explore the energy trilemma: how to balance climate goals with affordability and security in a rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape.

ERIG was present with both a booth and a mini-stand, showcasing flagship projects such as DelHyVEHR, NAVHYS, HEAVENN, and Hy2Market.
Our team participated in matchmaking sessions and contributed to discussions on multi-gas strategies, hydrogen integration, and regional energy resilience.

A Programme Framed by Urgency and Innovation

The symposium opened with a powerful keynote by Tom Middendorp, former General at the Dutch Ministry of Defence, who addressed the reshaping of global energy geopolitics. This was followed by sessions on trade wars, climate denialism, and the resilience of local actors in pursuing climate solutions.

Throughout the two days, participants engaged in:

  • Plenary sessions on energy security, offshore wind, and hydrogen infrastructure
  • Parallel workshops covering topics such as:
    • The ecological future of the North Sea
    • Nordic Green Carbon and cross-border energy molecules
    • Gas infrastructure innovation and entrepreneurship
    • Offshore security and critical infrastructure protection.

Youth Engagement and Matchmaking

A highlight of Day 2 was the focus on the next generation. Students and young professionals were invited to participate in panel discussions, challenges, and dedicated matchmaking sessions. This emphasis on youth reflects ERIG’s commitment to fostering future energy leaders and innovators.

Key Takeaways

  • Gas remains central to Europe’s energy transition, especially in hybrid systems combining electrons and molecules.
  • Multi-gas approaches are essential for achieving climate goals while maintaining flexibility and affordability.
  • Cross-sector collaboration—from ports to policymakers—is vital for scaling hydrogen and offshore energy solutions.
  • Youth inclusion and knowledge exchange are critical for long-term innovation and public acceptance.

Wind meets Gas 2025 reaffirmed Groningen’s role as a hub for energy dialogue and innovation. ERIG is proud to have contributed to this dynamic exchange and looks forward to continuing its work on integrated energy systems across Europe.
